IT COULDN’T BE A COINCIDENCE, surely. Running into someone from Hannah’s past who - she claimed - she hadn’t seen since the trial. Back at the police station, Matt found his thoughts returning again and again to their brunch that morning. He tried to remember everything Hannah had told him about Jonathan Grainger, but he couldn’t seem to get past one tiny detail that settled, sharply, in his chest, poking him every time he tried to move past it. Jonathan Grainger had been Hannah’s boyfriend. It had been years ago, but something about the way she had lit up when she recognized him, the ease they had with one another had made Matt jealous.

It’s because he’s a suspect, he told himself. Or he should be. He hadn’t been able to raise the issue with Hannah, because when he’d tried to, their breakfasts arrived. Grainger had left fairly quickly after that, making the usual empty promises to meet up again soon. Hannah had said nothing about what was going on, and for a moment, the danger she had been in seemed to recede into the background. But still, Matt couldn’t let it go. He kept trying to steer their conversation around to who might be behind the threat to her, even trying to work some way to discover Grainger’s role in the accident that had set her on the path to becoming a lawyer, but even that had led nowhere. Matt had sounded jealous, he knew, and the idea was so ridiculous that he had abandoned his line of questioning and focused instead on the meal. Hannah had at least been right on that count: they were the best blueberry pancakes he’d ever had. And spending time with Hannah doing something as utterly normal as eating brunch had been nice. Matt blinked. It had been more than nice. It had been almost...like a date.

Warmth seeped into his cheeks.

Yeah, a date that got crashed by her ex-boyfriend. The thought was enough to raise a wry smile, and Matt turned to the growing pile of paperwork that was slowly taking over his desk. His partner hadn’t been joking about him taking a break from active duty for a while. Matt stifled a yawn, wondering how he would get through the next few hours without succumbing to sleep when another thought struck him. He had wanted to know more about the crash that had propelled Hannah into the legal system, and he especially wanted to know more about how Jonathan Grainger fitted into it. Was it possible that his meeting them that morning wasn’t chance, or even a fun opportunity for old friends to reunite, as Hannah seemed determined to think, but designed that way? Matt’s hand hovered over his computer mouse. Maybe there was more to Jonathan Grainger than there seemed, and if Hannah wasn’t willing to help him find out, he’d have to look into it himself.

Before he lost his nerve, he tapped into the police database, pulling up current details for the man he’d met that morning.
